About the Artist
Arthur Canvass
Contemporary painter working between intuition and material, based in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Davide Nuzzo, known artistically as Arthur Canvass / SUJOI, is an Italian-born contemporary painter originally from Piedmont, Italy, who has been living and creating in Sofia, Bulgaria, for the past thirteen years.
An emerging voice within the independent contemporary art scene, Arthur Canvass works primarily in large-scale abstraction, landscapes, and botanical compositions, with a particular fascination for poppies and flowers. His paintings are created mainly with professional-grade acrylics on stretched canvas and masonite, using brushes, spatulas, his bare hands, and a selection of unconventional wooden tools whose precise use remains, for now, part of his personal artistic vocabulary.
His process is largely intuitive. Rather than beginning with a predetermined composition, Arthur often starts by covering the surface with plaster, followed by successive layers of paint. Forms and structures emerge through instinct, spontaneity, and the unpredictable interaction between material and gesture. As the work develops, he observes the shapes that have appeared, reading figures, movements, and possible narratives within them. These discoveries then become a guide, allowing the composition to evolve organically toward its final form.
Although he did not pursue formal artistic studies in his early years, his inclination toward drawing and painting was evident from childhood. He grew up surrounded by a strong visual and creative influence: an uncle who was a sculptor, an aunt who was a painter, and a father who restored antique furniture and cultivated a deep appreciation for antiquities. This environment shaped his early relationship with art and encouraged decades of experimentation with drawing and painting.
Later, his interests expanded toward anthropology, the humanities, and music, including playing an instrument and singing. In recent years, painting has returned to the centre of his creative life—not as a departure from his previous interests, but as a natural continuation of them. The result has been an intense and prolific period of artistic production, with more than 250 works created in the last four years alone.
Working independently from his private studio in Sofia, Arthur Canvass creates one-of-a-kind original compositions while continually exploring new subjects, techniques, and visual possibilities. His principal areas of exploration remain botanical imagery, landscapes, and abstract works characterized by symbolic and allegorical undertones.
At the heart of his practice is a dialogue between chance and intention: the accidental forms that emerge from the first layers of the painting become a starting point, while the artist's intuition, observation, and intervention gradually transform them into a finished work.
Through this approach, Arthur Canvass develops an organic form of abstraction in which recognizable elements—flowers, landscapes, figures, and natural forms—can emerge, dissolve, and transform. His work reflects an ongoing search for meaning within spontaneity, and for the balance between what is deliberately created and what is discovered along the way.
Based in Sofia, Arthur Canvass continues to develop his independent practice, producing original works and limited-edition prints for an increasingly international audience of art and design enthusiasts and private collectors across Europe.
